Sanitation District No. 1

Growing SD1’s Social Media Presence from the Ground Up

Challenge

In 2020, SD1 had virtually no social media presence and struggled to reach residents with critical updates on projects, rates, and community initiatives.

The organization needed an in-house, cost-effective strategy to connect with its community.

solution

A phased approach that prioritized sustainability and building trust with residents and executive leadership.

How We Did It

  • Created policies and guardrails that ensured brand safety while allowing creative flexibility
  • Demonstrated to leadership that not every post needs to go viral—every post needs to build trust, and that’s achievable
  • Built foundational presence on Facebook and LinkedIn first, where the district’s core demographic was most active
  • Added X/Twitter for real-time updates and Instagram for visual storytelling and younger residents
  • Gave each platform a distinct voice and content strategy tailored to its audience
  • Built infrastructure around what’s repeatable—content libraries, reusable templates, and cross-promotion workflows
  • Used AI when appropriate, but always come back to what works locally

Results achieved as social media lead representing SD1 as part of their communications team.
